What the Heck is Biotech?

Posted by Erin Schmidt on

You may have been hearing about 'biotech' ingredients in your skincare. We promise these are not tiny robots or AI which are controlling you... These are skincare ingredients which help to mimic our natural skin's processes and work with it to help strengthen our bodies naturally.  They come from advanced and ethical science because they are not animal or human derived, but come from plants and other botanicals. So biotech is an easy and fancy way of saying all of that essentially.

So what is heck Biotech anyway? Biotech ingredients are advanced, nature-inspired ingredients derived from natural sources to act like our own skin's natural elements and ingredients that help to stimulate receptors and natural skincare responses.  Made not just for anti-aging, but also helping strengthen and repair the barrier of our largest and most vital organ- our skin.

Know thy Biome.

Your skin biome is vital to your health.

Why is a healthy skin barrier (aka. skin biome) important?A balanced microbiome keeps skin healthy and radiant, while disruption can cause acne, eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea. Our skin's biome is essential for our health, as they communicate with and educate the immune system, protect against pathogens entering the body by forming a barrier, and maintain skin pH.  Meaning they tell your body what is happening and signal it to respond by protecting it naturally by increasing collagen and other beneficial skin processes.

Meet our Biotech Botanical Heros:

Peptides:   To keep it simple, Peptides are ingredients which stimulate cells to function as they were designed to reduce signs of aging. There are many different types of peptides which function in very different ways.

In more detail, Peptides are small chains of amino acids that signal the skin to produce more collagen and elastin, helping improve firmness, smoothness, and the appearance of fine lines over time.

Vegan Plant Stem Cells: Stem cells from plants, flowers and fruits are the building blocks of life and are powerful in helping refine skin.  We never use unethical stem cells.

*Retinol-Alternatives: While retinol is safe if used only at night- it causes sensitivity to the sun, making skin more susceptible to burning.  Our founder is very sensitive to burns and has had pre-cancer spots removed, so we have eliminated retinol from our line.  We use flower. based bakuchiol and Kopara micro-algae retinol-alternatives, which act like retinol to refine skin, but do not cause irritation or sun sensitivity.

*This is especially important if you have fair skin or have had skin cancer.

Our Kopara microalgae retinol-alternative is an eco-friendly ingredient derived from high temperature exopolysaccharides in French Polynesian atolls.  They assist in exfoliation and resurfacing and are found to be more effective than retinol.  It is fermented so it also create prebiotics which assists in a healthy skin biome.

Hyaluronic Acid: Our skin naturally has this compound which assists skin in staying hydrated and not drying out.  As we age, our skin loses this compound, so we are able to add it from a vegan source to lock moisture into skin.

Vegan Squalane and Hemisqualane: from fermented sugarcane, these oils are wonderful as silicone alternatives. They won't clog pores for most skin and provide a wonderful and light skin feel.

Fermented Extracts: Fermented extracts are wonderful in assisting skin's natural biome. Our skin's biome (aka. skin barrier) is essential for our health, as they educate the immune system, protect against pathogens entering the body by forming a barrier, and maintain skin pH. Lactobacillus from fermented kimchi assists in a healthy skin biome/skin barrier. Or Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate dervied from fermented radish roots which is a gentle anti-bacterial agent.
